Vietnam - United States promote cooperation in information and communications

On October 29, 2024, in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Phan Tam had talk with Mr. Arun Venkataraman, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director of the US and Foreign Commercial Service.


US businesses have been deeply involved in IT development activities in Vietnam. The Ministry of Information and Communications is always interested in improving the investment environment, creating favorable conditions for US technology businesses to expand their operations and contribute to the development of the Vietnamese IT industry.

The Ministry of Information and Communications hopes that the US will support the construction of an Open RAN Lab and Academy to enhance the capacity for research and development of this technology in Vietnam, as well as promote research and application of Open RAN not only in Vietnam but also in the ASEAN region.

Mr. Arun Venkataraman informed that the US was ready to support and assist in the research and development of Open RAN in Vietnam and the ASEAN region.

Sharing about an area of mutual interest, artificial intelligence (AI), Mr. Arun Venkataraman said that the National Institute of Standards and Technology under the US Department of Commerce was currently developing AI standards, principles, guidelines for responsible use of AI, and an AI risk management framework to guide policies for the development and use of AI in the public and private sectors. The US side wishes to establish an information exchange mechanism with the Ministry of Information and Communications to share experiences in exploiting the benefits of AI in a responsible and effective manner.

Deputy Minister Phan Tam shared that Vietnam's approach to AI development was to prioritize the development of specialized AI applications in narrow fields, meeting the specific needs of each organization and individual.

At the end of the meeting, both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation in the field of Information and Communications, especially in the context of the two countries having just upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership./.
