Considerable potential for development of Vietnam’s digital content sector: experts

 Digital content is a potential market in Vietnam, in the context of increasingly developed network infrastructure and equipment, combined with a young population, a large number of smartphone users and 3G and 4G subscribers, experts have said.

Experts in ICT and the digital content sector gathered at an international seminar in Hanoi on November 22 to discuss practice guides for local digital content development and support in ASEAN countries. The event was held by the National Institute of Information and Communications Strategy (NIICS), under the Vietnam Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).
 
Reports by NIICS at the seminar showed that the ASEAN community of more than 400 million people is a huge ecosystem for the development of digital content. The annual revenue of the ASEAN digital content industry currently stands at US$150 billion, of which US$5-7 billion is from copyright and US$55-65 billion from digital content services.
 
Vietnam is not out of the trend as the country ranks first in the top 10 countries with e-learning growth, surpassing both Thailand and China. By the end of 2016 Vietnam had 309 projects investing in online education and training with a total registered capital of over US$767 million.
 
By 2017, Vietnam had 32.8 million gamers, accounting for 35% the population. The gaming sector’s revenue in 2018 is forecast to reach US$145 million and could be up US$208 million by 2022.
 
The country also leads the region with 92% of online video watchers per week, followed by the Philippines (85%), Indonesia (81%), Thailand (76%) and Malaysia (74%). Meanwhile, mobile advertising revenue in 2017 reached US$78 million and the figure is forecast to reach more than US$200 million by 2020.
 
However, challenges remain ahead as there are many ASEAN people who are still not connected to the network, said Trieu Minh Long, Deputy General Director of the MIC’s International Cooperation Department. In order to increase the number of people connecting to the network, one of the best solutions is to promote local digital content, but this work is still weak as a lack of local content is a challenge for increasing network connectivity, Long added.
 
According to Assoc Prof., Dr. Tran Minh Tuan, Vice President of NIICS, in order to create a breakthrough in this area, it is necessary to address barriers to creativity, promote the development of mobile financial services and e-commerce, and build broadband networks, accompanied with increasing awareness on digital content services and promoting local digital ecosystems.

Experts at the seminar discussed solutions for digital content development in ASEAN, especially in competition with data sources and digital content from tech giants such as Netflix, Spotify, Google and YouTube, as well as copyright and digital content management issues.
 
They also surveyed effective models in promoting digital content in ASEAN countries for their digital content development strategy in each nation, in line with the traditional cultures, as well as towards new technologies around the world whilst still retaining the identity of ASEAN nations.
 
For Vietnam, Dr. Tuan said that the MIC aims to secure the infrastructure, the internet and server systems to ensure that digital content is accessible to the public, while boosting the development of data centres in Vietnam to facilitate operators of digital content and suppliers in not having to store data outside of the country.
 
In order to develop digital content in a healthy manner, the MIC is also aiming to build local social networks developed by Viettel and VCCorp, as well as continuing to promote social networks on the Zalo platform and facilitating development of search systems in Vietnam.
