At the seminar, the information about the smart city development in Vietnam was shared. Accordingly, the goal is that until 2020, Vietnam must develop at least 3 smart cities. The government prioritizes the development of digital industry, smart travel and smart agriculture.

In the current context, the smart city development in Vietnam has both advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage is the support of the Party and State. Vietnam is also experiencing rapid urbanization. This development will create the need for smart cities.

One of the advantages for smart cities is that Vietnam has an advanced telecommunications infrastructure and a high proportion of Internet users. The number of broadband Internet subscriber grows strongly. The international integration also accelerates the transfer of technology and the construction of smart cities. Vietnam is also implementing e-government.

The biggest challenge in deploying smart cities in Vietnam lies in the limited infrastructure, especially in many remote and isolated provinces. Another problem is the slow deployment of information systems and national databases.

In addition, the legal environment for smart cities has not been finalized. Some state agencies are still not really interested in developing IT.

The Ministry of Information and Communication has been studying directions to develop the road map for smart cities. MIC is also promoting international cooperation to learn experiences to build a typical model suitable with real conditions in Vietnam.
