Việt Nam joined the ITU in 1976 and became a member of the ITU Coordinating Council for three consecutive terms, from 1994 to 2006.

The Southeast Asian country has actively contributed to standardizing telecommunication charge and payment in favor of developing countries.

Some ITU-backed projects have been deployed in Việt Nam like the multi-purpose community telecom development in disadvantaged areas and the project on drafting the ICT development strategy with visions to 2020.

The ITU also helps train Vietnamese telecommunication staff.
